COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Black Lake sturgeon fishing season will officially open on Saturday, Feb. 7 with a limit of six sturgeon. Anglers must register online by Friday, Feb. 6 (at a trailer near Zollner Rd) and display bright red flags during fishing hours. FOX 17
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Robinette's Apple Haus & Winery is closed to the public until June 2 to allow the family to perform essential orchard maintenance and facility upgrades (including a shift to canned hard cider production). This seasonal shutdown, the first since 2008-2009, aims to align operations with peak foot traffic. FOX 17
- ➤ Grand Rapids is set for more downtown visitors from two new venues that will draw over 20,000 people and stretch parking capacity with 15,686 public spots plus many private ones (residents may need to walk a few blocks). Local business owners expect more customer traffic. MLive

- ➤ Grand Rapids Public Library will host a free Lunar New Year event at three branches (Main, Seymour, Yankee Clipper) on Feb. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will include family-friendly activities that honor the Year of the Horse and Asian traditions. MLive
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ AAA said that Grand Rapids has some of the lowest gas prices in Michigan at $2.53 per gallon, 18 cents below last month and 44 cents lower than last year; drivers can fill a 15-gallon tank for about $40. ABC 13
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Consumers Energy’s Muskegon Solar covers 1,900 acres and now powers about 40,000 homes and businesses with over 550,000 panels (which rotate to follow the sun) after beginning construction in spring 2024 with more than 200 union-sourced jobs. FOX 17
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ada Township began construction on a $2.5M pedestrian bridge over the Thornapple River yesterday, +linking nearby homes to downtown and Legacy Park+; work is set to finish by July 15, and residents should use alternate routes during construction +to avoid temporary closures+. FOX 17
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Free radon testing kits are offered to Kent County homes throughout January at the main clinic at 700 Fuller Ave NE and at select library branches on Tuesday mornings (Jan. 6, 13, 20, 27) to help residents test for this dangerous, odorless gas. FOX 17
- ➤ Kent County Health Department is offering free radon test kits this January at Kent District Library branches and its main clinic in Grand Rapids to help residents test homes. Kits are given each Tuesday (Plainfield Jan. 6, Cascade Jan. 13, Grandville Jan. 20, Kentwood Jan. 27) for winter radon checks. ABC 13
- ➤ The Kent County Health Department and Kent District Library offer free radon test kits during Radon Action Month; an informational table runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Tuesday, with kits available today at Plainfield Branch and at the county clinic in Grand Rapids while supplies last.
