  • A nonprofit from Byron Center opened doors on Friday and today in Wyoming to help dozens displaced by Monday’s Crossroads Apartments fire. Residents can receive food (and clothing) and support at the Buist Community Assistance Center.  FOX 17
  • West Michigan trainer Crystal Snyder reached her 100th service dog placement with Walt at PAWS With A Cause this week, assisting Katie Stark with daily tasks and boosting her independence (each dog is trained for specific needs).  ABC 13
  • Mary Noe, a 104-year-old WWII nurse veteran, celebrated her birthday Friday in Lowell with family—some traveled far—to honor her long life and passion for music. Her event brought together loved ones who continue to celebrate her legacy each year.  FOX 17

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new gas station with a drive-thru restaurant, Junction Pizza and Subs, is set to open later this year next to Griff’s Georgetown Ice Arena at 8420 48th Ave in Georgetown Township. Site work has begun on the 5,784 sqft building — which will feature a 4,500 sqft canopy — to serve motorists.  MLive
  • Asada at 1450 Wealthy St. SE closed after owner Steven Martinez said declining sales made it unsustainable. Meanwhile, Corewell Health will expand Butterworth Hospital with a 621,000 sqft tower featuring 180 beds to be completed by end of 2030.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifth-grade girls from East Grand Rapids clinched a state championship in the FIRST Robotics LEGO League, earning a spot at the world championship in Houston set for April. The team spent four months meeting regularly to build their robot + refine their innovation.  FOX 17
  • A Northview High School teacher resigned Friday after being placed on administrative leave for a police investigation, and district officials said the change does not affect student safety.  ABC 13

  • Residents are advised by the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services to review their homeowners, renters, and car insurance policies as subzero temperatures bring risks of frostbite and costly damage this weekend — contact DIFS Monday–Friday for guidance.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kent and Ottawa counties face dangerously cold wind chills below -20 degrees, so over a dozen warming centers have opened across Grand Rapids this weekend. Residents needing shelter may visit sites like Lotus Brew Coffee or Grand Rapids Public Library (hours vary) for safety.  MLive
