COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Walker Ice and Fitness Center has converted a bookshelf into a small food pantry amid rising food insecurity, and local groups now sponsor similar pantries. The Walker Hope Collaborative is expanding the effort for February (while March remains covered) as residents donate essential items.  FOX 17

BUSINESS NEWS

  • West Michigan café MudPenny is launching its new 3,500 sqft restaurant in the Holiday Inn at Spring Lake; remodeling is underway and will finish by mid- to late March, and the restaurant will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner plus room service as part of a new partnership.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michigan native Billy Strings won a Grammy when Highway Prayers earned Best Bluegrass Album at the 68th Grammy Awards; the album, released September 2024 and featuring 20 songs, shows his signature style. He will tour Ionia at the end of August — reaffirming his Midwest roots.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist issued statements today to recognize Black History Month, noting the historic contributions of Black Americans to Michigan's culture and economy. They encouraged residents to learn from local history (dating back to Carter G. Woodson’s 1915 celebration) and work toward a more united state.  ABC 13

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In January, planning commissions approved eight projects in our region — including a new Biggby Coffee in Caledonia Township and a potential Chipotle at a Walker Meijer parking lot — to boost commercial and community development across Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Boston Square and Wyoming.  MLive

  • Anglers are enjoying prime ice fishing at Reeds Lake today after a year of scarce safe ice, with some reporting 8 inches of stable ice and expecting the cold snap to continue through the week (local experts note improved conditions).  FOX 17
  • Today at LMCU Ballpark, Crash the River Rascal (the 2025 Midwest League Champions' mascot) cast his Groundhog Day forecast by seeing his shadow and predicting six more weeks of winter. Fans expect West Michigan Whitecap baseball to return as spring nears.  FOX 17
  • Local high school basketball fans can vote for the 13 On Your Sidelines MVP of the Week covering performances from Jan. 26-30.
