- ➤ Martin Luther King Park will open a new $19.7M, 25,000-sqft facility at 900 Fuller Ave. SE on Feb. 21, replacing an outdated lodge with a modern community hub featuring free after-school programs, rentable event spaces, classrooms, and a gymnasium — a project designed to remove cost and transportation barriers. - ➤ Former Hudsonville Ice Cream owner and CEO Denny Ellens (70) died Saturday, Feb. 7. He led the brand for over 20 years and remained on the board until his death, with his family saying his commitment to quality and service shaped the local community. MLive

- ➤ The community legends project in Grand Rapids has relaunched with plans to install a seven-foot statue of the Council of Three Fires (an alliance of Native American tribes) near McKay Tower this fall to honor local history, and it is considering a statue of Rich DeVos at DeVos Place as discussions continue. - ➤ Ice on Lake Michigan is about 36% as cold air grips the Great Lakes, prompting local meteorologists to review records and note that in 2014, ice cover briefly reached 93% + it has not fully frozen in the past 50 years. Officials say a complete freeze remains unlikely today. MLive
