CULTURE NEWS

  • Muslims in West Michigan marked Ramadan by gathering at At-Tawheed Mosque in Kentwood (a community hub for over a decade) where members joined Friday prayers and iftar. Super Green Market and the West Michigan Palestinian Cultural Society provided over 700 meals to celebrate the start of the holy month.  FOX 17
  • A new temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is under construction in Kentwood, halfway built; the public can visit an observation deck at 2400 Forest Hill Ave. SE from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday as the project will take two to three years.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kent County has launched its First Steps Kent initiative to boost early literacy for children with developmental differences in Grand Rapids, including autism, low vision and hearing impairments. The alliance met Friday with literacy stakeholders and will choose pilot projects such as a tech lending library and mentoring program.  ABC 13
  • Godfrey-Lee Public Schools will fully cooperate with a federal inquiry announced Feb. 18 that reviews classroom content practices in the Wyoming district. Superintendent Arnetta Thompson noted the review is standard and no charges have been issued.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Neighbors in Cascade are reviewing water treatment options as they await PFAS sampling results and state-provided filters. Matthew Cole from Besco Water Treatment said carbon filtration is effective while whole-house systems offer longer coverage as property testing and state investigations continue.  FOX 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The former Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center on the north side of Grand Rapids is listed on the federal government's auction website. Located south of Riverside Park along Monroe Avenue near the Grand River, the property spans 3.47 acres and its price was lowered to $4.5M from $4.9M.  FOX 17

  • The Polish National Aid Society is hosting Friday Fish Fries at historic Jackson St. Hall every Friday from Feb. 20 to March 27 from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The $15 plate includes fish, coleslaw, hush puppies, french fries, mac and cheese + a roll.  FOX 17
