COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Grand Rapids man passes out pizzas to the homeless by buying stacks from Uccello's on Monroe Center Street plus he founded One World Nourishment last fall to spread support near Mel Trotter and Dégagé Ministries.  FOX 17
  • Kids' Food Basket launched its Go Orange campaign this March to raise $145,000 for West Michigan children facing food insecurity. Community members may donate, volunteer, or dine at participating restaurants (check for details).  FOX 17
  • After over 2,000 responses, the 2026 Fish Fry Frenzy has narrowed its entries to eight top fish fries from local churches + organizations and businesses. Voters may cast their vote between Monday and Saturday midnight, with winners announced weekly before the champion is crowned on April 3.  ABC 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two Sons Pizza opened a pop-up shop at 67 Ottawa Ave. SW, serving New York-style slices until it moves to the Ledyard Building for a new concept with Midwest-style pies, an arcade and a bar; owners will plant a tree for each bag of flour sold to support the community.  MLive
  • Haworth has expanded its lineup with two recent acquisitions: Tayco and Heller Furniture, which add office and indoor-outdoor pieces to its global network. The furniture maker reported record 2025 global sales of $2.7 billion and aims to offer more options for its dealers & clients.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices statewide are rising but Grand Rapids remains one of the cheapest spots with regular unleaded at $2.88 per gallon, according to AAA. Drivers filling a 15-gallon tank pay about $44 compared to higher-priced metro areas.  ABC 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Amy VanderLaan received a surprise Teacher of the Week honor at Harrison Park Academy today that moved her to tears, and Principal Brad Moore said the award recognizes her dedication to teaching and her deep connection with her students.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews began work on replacing the MLK Jr. Bridge and northbound ramps on US 131 on Monday, March 2, with demolition scheduled for April and full construction set to conclude in mid-November (per MDOT).  FOX 17

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Grand Rapids' housing market stays competitive with only 1.5 months of available homes, defying national spring trends. Realtor Ross Bacon advises buyers and sellers to contact lenders now as mortgage rates fall below 6+ keeping local prices below the national average.  ABC 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Las Canchas on Seward Avenue is set to receive a turf upgrade this spring after a $35,000 allocation was approved by the Downtown Development Authority — the new surface will improve safety and attract futsal players as the local soccer scene grows.  FOX 17
  • Grand Raggidy Roller Derby will hold its Saturday home opener at JAM Sports in Grandville with bouts pitting the Bombshells against Attack and the All Stars against World. Fans can enjoy vendor booths, a GR Trans Foundation donation drive — easing legal name changes — and a craft sale.  ABC 13
