  • High winds knocked a tree onto a Wyoming home’s roof around 9:30 a.m. Friday, leaving the family cleaning up while Consumers Energy reminds locals to stay at least 25 feet away from live power lines.  FOX 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Byron Center educator Jill Gates won the First Bloem Poster Competition for the 97th Tulip Time Festival with her watercolor Legacy in Blue and Bloom. The festival runs May 1 through May 10 in Holland and her design is featured on merchandise.  FOX 17

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new feasibility study shows that an expanded 600-room convention hotel at DeVos Place would cost $354.9 million and boost downtown events—plans now require significant public support and review by the Kent County Convention/Arena Authority before work can move forward.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, Mar. 13, Grand Rapids Schools placed deputy superintendent Brandy Lovelady Mitchell on leave for the remainder of the school year. Chief area instructional leaders will assume additional responsibility as the district adjusts its leadership (more details to come).  MLive
  • GVSU is hosting nearly 60 middle and high school teams for the Region 12 Michigan Science Olympiad tournament on March 21 at its Valley Campus in Allendale. Competitions start at 8 a.m. and finish with an awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m. — top performers will advance to the state competition.  MLive
