COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A homeless shelter for women run by Dégagé Ministries opened in January 2024 at 129 Jefferson Ave in downtown Grand Rapids and is one of the first programs of its kind in Michigan, offering long-term transitional housing and on-site health services. In its first year, the program lowered EMS calls by 87% plus reduced ER visits by 65% while all 25 residents remained housed and about half are ready to move into independent homes.  MLive

  • Irish Off Ionia, Grand Rapids' largest St. Patrick’s Day street party, starts Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Calder Plaza after moving from Ionia Avenue (its new downtown location).  MLive

  • A West Michigan woman changed her usual lottery game and won $1 million on a scratch ticket in Kent County, taking a one-time lump sum of about $693,000. She visited the lottery headquarters in Lansing to claim her prize + plans to buy a new home and save the rest.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rosalynn Bliss, Grand Rapids’ first woman mayor and longtime city commissioner, said a kind teacher and other helpful women gave her strong lessons when she struggled with a rare bone disease — lessons that now help her guide young women.  ABC 13
  • Acrisure Amphitheater, a 12,000-seat riverfront venue in downtown Grand Rapids, is roughly half built after crews installed the final steel beam for its canopy (at 201 Market Ave SW) on Friday. The venue will open in May 2026 and host about 54 events per season (drawing an estimated 300,000 visitors) as project partners celebrated the milestone during a topping-off ceremony.  MLive
  • The Michigan Supreme Court has selected Megan Cavanagh to become chief justice as Elizabeth Clement prepares to retire by the end of April — Gov. Whitmer can soon appoint a justice to fill Clement’s seat, with the new appointee running for retention in 2026.  FOX 17
