COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mel Trotter Ministries is piloting a new transitional housing program for homeless men who have not found success in traditional shelters—designed to offer long-term support for up to nine residents. The ministry plans to finalize a lease for the housing site within the next month and will run the pilot for at least six months with funding from donations and state dollars.  MLive

  • PGA Tour Superstore opened its new 35,000-square-foot store at 4100 28th St in Kentwood to serve golfers in a growing market near Grand Rapids. The store offers a range of equipment, apparel and services including an indoor putting green and simulator bays—helping both beginners and skilled players find what they need.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Dominike Sterling, 33, and Tyriq Bettison, 26, are charged with open murder in connection with the Nov. 6 fatal shooting of Darryl Yarber in a Burton Heights neighborhood—court testimony on March 17 said Sterling planned to pin the crime on his dead brother from a high-profile April 2024 police pursuit.  MLive
  • A motorcyclist who fled police was tracked with help from a Michigan State Police helicopter after taking a dirt trail near Division Avenue and Burton Street on March 14—he crashed into a car while trying to escape and was taken into custody soon after.  FOX 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Holiday Bar on the westside hosted a Fake Patrick’s Day celebration last Saturday that broke its visitor record — the bar offered live music and Irish-themed food like corned beef and cabbage and Guinness-battered fish and chips, with festivities continuing Monday.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Rapids announced that applications are now open for its summer jobs program for youth ages 15 to 24. The city will hire over 100 participants for a six-week period from June 9 to July 18 at $13 per hour — professional development workshops and bus passes are also offered.  MLive
  • The Kent County Parks Department announced a series of projects that will improve local parks with new playgrounds, dog parks, equestrian trails, open shelters and expanded beach areas. Projects will begin in early spring and some will finish ahead of Memorial Day weekend (for example, a new dog park at Wahlfield Park and updated trails on the Grand River Greenway).  MLive
