  • Mel Trotter Ministries and Next Step of West Michigan began building 16 tiny homes in southeast Grand Rapids on March 20 to help lessen homelessness. The Hope Village project is set on 1.65 acres near 100 Garden St SE and costs $3.5M.  MLive
  • 11-year-old Vivian Gray received a wheelchair accessible van from Ottawa County nonprofit Lori's Voice at Clock Mobility in Grand Rapids Thursday—she has brain cancer, cerebral palsy, and both visual and hearing impairments. The van gives her greater independence as her family manages her ongoing care.  FOX 17

CRIME NEWS

  • Kentwood police said a man was hospitalized with a stab wound to his chest after an overnight fight on March 20th in the 4200 block of Nature Trail Drive SE—police are questioning another man detained at the scene while his injuries are not life-threatening.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A West Michigan nonprofit and Grand Rapids Public Schools will host a week-long esports event over spring break at Ottawa Hills High School so students aged 13 and older can compete in Fortnite, learn game design from Epic Games, and earn prizes of up to $2,000—this safe program will take place on April 5, 6, 11 and 12 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Transportation has hosted virtual and in-person meetings to inform drivers about planned construction work on West Michigan highways. Projects include a $105 million effort between I-96 and M-66 and reconstruction on US-131 that will last through fall—drivers are advised to use Mi Drive or their GPS app for route updates.  ABC 13

  • The OK Red Conference announced its All-Conference girls basketball team for the 2024-25 season, with coaches selecting a first team and honorable mentions based on players’ strong performances. Rockford Rams senior Anna Wypych played a key role in a state quarterfinal win on March 18 at Mona Shores High School (55-49), underscoring the season’s competitive play.  MLive
  • Coaches selected the OK Green All-Conference boys basketball team for the 2024-25 season from teams in Muskegon, Byron Center, Mona Shores, and Reeths-Puffer—naming top performers like Keashaun Johnson, Elija Langston, and Darryl Thompkins Jr. Muskegon finished with a 10-0 record while Byron Center, Mona Shores, Caledonia, and Jenison completed the standings.  MLive
