COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Zina, a resilient Doberman/Husky mix available for adoption, has cared for 11 puppies + is fully vaccinated and spayed at Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary. The shelter invites local families seeking a calm companion to start her next chapter this week.  FOX 17
  • Feeding America West Michigan opened the Second Harvest Food Pantry at 3846 52nd Street SE in Kentwood to serve about 300 households a week with non-perishables, fresh produce, frozen foods and hygiene products; it operates Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. + Saturday 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  FOX 17
  • Community leaders and neighbors gathered Tuesday night as the SAFE (Safe Alliance for Everyone) task force discussed youth gun violence prevention and plans for creating safer spaces for 15-to-24-year-olds. City officials also announced a gun violence memorial art installation to honor those lost and promote healing in the area.  FOX 17

  • Schnitz Deli on Fulton Ave. is set to reopen Thursday, March 26 after closing for a week and a half due to flash flooding on March 10. Owner Dan Rios said flood damage affected the main floor and basement.  FOX 17
  • The Michigan Strategic Fund approved up to $915,000 in bonds to expand Trane’s manufacturing by funding a tunnel (for transferring copper pipes) linking two facilities at Kraft Ave. SE in Cascade Township. The tunnel is expected to complete by April’s end, creating about 200 jobs.  MLive
  • JR Automation in Holland appointed Farid Bichareh as its chief technology officer on Tuesday, Mar. 24. The company is building a new 286,000 sqft global headquarters in Zeeland (consolidating 350 employees and adding 150 jobs) this fall.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Kent County tourism reached record highs in 2025 with $290.6 million in hotel revenue as room sales climbed to 2.36 million nights, Experience Grand Rapids announced during its meeting at Frederik Meijer Gardens + Sculpture Park. The bureau projects 173,500 group room nights in 2026, driven by upcoming events and new venues.  MLive
  • Fairlife will expand its Coopersville facility by adding 245,000 sqft of production space and 150 new jobs—supported by $3.93 million and a $17 million state grant to upgrade the water system—to boost production and secure water capacity in the region. The project will drive industrial growth for the area.  MLive

  • Grand Rapids officials announced free summer day camps at Garfield, MLK and Roosevelt parks offering sports, arts, reading and STEM activities. Sessions run June 15–July 3, July 6–24 and July 27–Aug. 14 with weekday programs; non-resident fees apply and the city is hiring camp counselors aged 14 or older.  ABC 13

  • Ottawa County health officials advise residents to avoid the Grand River and Ottawa Creek near Allendale after a sewage spill began last week; the advisory warns against swimming, fishing and other water activities until tests confirm the water is safe.  FOX 17

  • Construction Simplified plans to demolish Adobe Mexican Kitchen this May and build Abode West Fulton — a 109 unit apartment and retail building near the university and Acrisure Amphitheatre. The project is estimated to cost $24.5 million and will be complete by June 2027.  MLive
