  • A partial solar eclipse will occur Saturday morning as the moon partially blocks the sun across parts of North America, Europe, Africa, and northern Asia. Grand Rapids residents must travel to see the event and are advised by NASA to use safe solar viewing glasses—or a pinhole projector—to watch the eclipse safely.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Police Chief Eric Winstrom said there were no shootings in Grand Rapids during the past month—car thefts dropped from 156 last year to 42 between January and February—and officers averaged confiscating one illegal gun each day.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents in Holland watched a prerelease screening of the movie 'Holland' at Knickerbocker Theatre on March 24 and shared mixed views on its portrayal of local traditions and landmarks like Windmill Island—some praised the film for its local nods while others felt it missed the true spirit of their town. The movie will stream nationwide on Prime Video on March 27.  MLive

  • Grand Valley State University celebrated its first graduating class from the $70 million Daniel and Pamella DeVos Center for Interprofessional Health in Grand Rapids. Raschard France, one of the first nursing graduates from the accelerated second degree program, earned her degree after four years of study to help retain healthcare workers in West Michigan.  MLive

  • Annika Meier is a 15-year-old cancer patient from Rockford who struggles with medulloblastoma and surgery aftereffects—her family started Anni’s Army to fund research and help cover everyday costs for families facing pediatric cancer. The nonprofit will host a charity baseball game at Rockford High School on May 8 when her older brother plays and she and her twin brother watch, inviting community support.  ABC 13

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of Kent County announced it will build 100 homes in three years to ease the housing crisis in Grand Rapids and has raised $6 million of the $8 million needed; construction began on seven units and more than half will be in the Roosevelt Park neighborhood (Imagine Capital Campaign).  FOX 17

  • The SMAC-West all-conference boys basketball team for 2025 has been announced, honoring top players from Portage Central, Portage Northern, Mattawan and other local schools—Portage Central claimed the SMAC-East title with an 8-0 league record. The selection list includes both first-team and honorable mention players.  MLive
  • The GVSU women’s basketball team beat Gannon 60-32 (after a 20-5 run in the third quarter) and advanced to its third Final Four in the last decade. The win gave them a chance at a Division II national championship.  MLive
