ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • After a deadly storm swept through West Michigan, residents in Cascade cleaned up debris left by high winds on Monday—Rick Gilder helped his parents repair damage while a neighbor worried her longtime family home may be a total loss.  FOX 17
  • Strong storms on March 30th toppled a 75-foot-plus transmission tower in a cornfield near Grant and caused power outages for over 250,000 Consumers Energy customers; utility crews are working on restoration — many teams from out of state are assisting — and power may not be fully restored until Wednesday.  WOOD TV
  • On March 31st, a large tree suddenly fell on a minivan during storms, killing three children (aged 2 to 11) as the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said no measure could have prevented the incident.  WOOD TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • OVD Insurance will move from Wyoming to downtown Grand Rapids after partnering with CWD Real Estate Investment to invest $12 million in a renovated seven-story building at 37 Ottawa Ave NW — the relocation is expected to add 131 jobs.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Broadway Grand Rapids announced that Hamilton will return to DeVos Performance Hall for a two-week run from July 22 through Aug. 3 and tickets are on sale starting at $49 — premium seats will begin at $229. A lottery for $10 seats will be held closer to the performance dates.  MLive
  • Registration for 2025 ArtPrize is now open in Grand Rapids with solo entries costing $65 and group entries $130 until May 30th, and discounts available for students, faculty and staff. The event will run from Sept. 18th to Oct. 4th and will include artwork categories such as 2-D, 3-D, time based, installation, new media and design — offering over $400,000 in prizes and $200,000 in grants.  WOOD TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan’s 2025 fishing season begins today as the Department of Natural Resources enacts new rules that change inland stream rainbow trout limits, ban single-pointed hooks and spearing at select ports from November 1st to 30th, and set a new minimum 50-inch size limit for muskellunge in Thornapple Lake and Lake Hudson—rules that also update limits for northern pike, bass, and trout. Anglers—especially those over 17—must have a fishing license to fish.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction began Monday, March 31 on a nearly $30 million project to replace the Fruit Ridge Avenue bridge over I-96 and widen part of the road in Walker. The project will close the northbound ramp until July 25 and impose daily I-96 lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until April 4—further closures on I-96 and 3 Mile Road will start April 4 at 7 p.m. until April 7.  ABC 13
  • City planners reviewed proposals in March for projects including a demolition by Corewell Health to remove two downtown buildings for a surface parking lot—plus plans for a new Jiffy Lube and a pedestrian skywalk—to shape future developments in Grand Rapids.  MLive
