Good morning, Grand Rapids. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 2nd of April.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Mackinac Bridge stayed closed because ice fell from weekend storms — road workers did not have a plan to reopen the bridge and told drivers to avoid the area, and Gov. Whitmer declared a state of emergency for ten counties after ice storms caused damage and power outages in northern Michigan.  WOOD TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Jason Sessoms—accused of murdering his parents in Kansas City—was arrested in Covert Township on March 29 for a home invasion at a Blue Star Highway home and fought officers while being taken into custody; he now faces charges including first-degree murder and resisting an officer.  WOOD TV
  • Police agencies statewide—including the Kent County Sheriff’s Office—are increasing patrols this month to enforce Michigan’s hands-free law as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month to reduce distracted driving crashes. Officers will write citations and impose fines and community service for drivers who hold or touch their phones while driving.  WOOD TV
  • Former MSP sergeant Brian Keely — charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter for hitting and killing 25-year-old Samuel Sterling in April 2024 — asked a judge to pause the civil case until his criminal case is finished.  WOOD TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 28th, federal officials pulled nearly $42 million in pre-approved COVID-era funds from 27 school districts after they moved the reimbursement deadline to 5 p.m.; state education leaders said the decision forces districts to cut spending on essential building repairs – such as HVAC and windows – and may lead to reduced instructional funds.  ABC 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On March 30th, a severe storm knocked over several Consumers Energy transformers along Market Avenue, causing about 200 gallons of mineral oil to spill from the poles into storm drains that fed into the Grand River in Grand Rapids. State environmental officials said cleanup is underway and the oil will break down with sunlight — they do not expect harm to aquatic life.  MLive
  • Kent County Department of Public Works has released its annual Spring Recycling Guide to help residents sort household items correctly. The guide details which items can go in curbside bins and which require drop-offs at designated recycling centers.  MLive
