CRIME NEWS

  • Gilberto Hernandez entered the 63rd District Court today—he is charged with murder after witnesses said he shot his girlfriend, her sister, and their 56-year-old mother Norma Isabel Ramirez out of jealousy.  MLive

  • A Neil Diamond musical opened on April 1 at the DeVos Performance Hall—featuring several well-known songs for local fans. Performances will continue throughout the week for those wanting to see the show.  WOOD TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Utility and state environmental officials said that downed transformers on April 1 caused an oil sheen on the Grand River near metro Grand Rapids.  WOOD TV
  • Consumers Energy officials said one of their worst storms hit Michigan after a northern ice storm and southern tornadoes caused outages for over 62,000 customers and four deaths in Kalamazoo County. Repair crews from Michigan and other states worked long shifts to restore power and will finish by Friday—strong winds of up to 75 mph had worsened conditions on Wednesday.  MLive
  • Three days after tornadoes and strong winds damaged West Michigan, Consumers Energy is preparing for more storms on Wednesday, April 9th as freezing rain is forecast in the morning and severe weather may develop later; the utility is adding extra crews and contractors while urging residents to report hazards and follow safety advice — working with emergency managers to restore power and keep people safe.  WOOD TV

  • I-96 in Walker will be closed in both directions from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday for the demolition of the Fruit Ridge Avenue bridge—drivers should exit at Fruit Ridge and use the on-ramps, and 3 Mile Road will also be closed from Kinney Avenue to Elmridge Drive during this time.  WOOD TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials announced Tuesday that an adult in Kent County was diagnosed with measles—its first case in over 10 years—and urged people to get vaccinated. The patient visited several public places, and those who are unvaccinated should watch for fever, cough, and rash and seek medical advice if symptoms appear.  WOOD TV
