COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Georgetown Township is investing $850,000 to upgrade Maplewood and Rush Creek Parks by adding new pickleball courts, improved tennis and basketball courts, and extra seating, fencing and shade — a response to rising community demand — with construction set to begin late April and finish around October.  FOX 17

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices have climbed to an average of $4.11 a gallon on Sunday, driven by global oil tensions and increased seasonal travel (affecting local pumps in Grand Rapids) and are expected to continue rising in the coming days.  ABC 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jennifer Joppie, a high-energy fifth-grade teacher at Challenger Elementary, was honored as Teacher of the Week today and said she will retire next year on June 30 but plans to substitute in future classes (she remains passionate about teaching).  ABC 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The wood duck was named the state duck last month and is celebrated by local bird watchers. The Grand Rapids Audubon Club has grown rapidly over the past six years, and local experts say its comeback from near extinction inspires residents to explore nature.  FOX 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amtrak canceled Train 371 between Grand Rapids and Chicago early Sunday due to a track washout from heavy rain — bus transportation was arranged for affected passengers. Train 370 was also canceled Saturday afternoon with three alternate buses provided, and repair timing remains unclear.  ABC 13
