  • Two women died in a house fire in Algoma Township yesterday in the 9800 block of Pine Island Drive NE when a 34-year-old man escaped after waking to smoke alarms, sheriff’s deputies said.  MLive
  • Crews responded early Monday (April 7th) to a house fire near Pine Island Drive NE and Fonger St NE in Algoma Township; one person was taken to the hospital and the road was closed.  WOOD TV

  • Ex-Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr has not decided if he will testify in his upcoming murder trial for Patrick Lyoya as defense attorneys say a court ruling may force him to speak if prosecution experts show what he heard or saw before the fatal shooting.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grand Rapids is hosting two free Water Pool-ooza events where families learn how clean water travels from lake to faucet through guided tours and interactive exhibits—water professionals will share their career insights. The April 19 event at the Lake Michigan Filtration Plant runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with encouraged registration, while the June 7 event at Riverside Park offers hands-on conservation activities with registration opening soon.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Grand River reached a record high of 12.72 feet on Monday, far above its usual 3 to 5 feet, placing it in the (action) stage of flooding as winter melt meets spring rain. Officials are closely monitoring conditions since further rain may push levels higher, potentially affecting low-lying areas.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers on northbound U.S. 131 near Wyoming face delays as the Michigan Department of Transportation closes the right off-ramp to Hall Street daily for road work from Monday, April 7 through Friday, April 11—from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weather permitting. This lane closure is one of over 25 state projects that began over the weekend and will finish Saturday, April 12—drivers are urged to follow posted signs.  MLive
  • Jack Hoedeman, president of Compass Property Development, is asking the city to amend his 2022 Brownfield incentive plan for the apartment building at 280 Ann St NW after a pause in construction caused delays, and the amendment would include reimbursement for eligible housing activities.  MLive
