  • Construction has resumed at Sullivan Field on Grand Rapids’ West Side as Fans of Valley Field — working with city officials — turn the old baseball park into a park for all. They plan to finish the work by next year and need to raise $600,000 of a $5 million goal.  WOOD TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Robinette’s Apple Haus & Winery is launching its new canned hard cider—moving from 750 milliliter bottles—and offering a mix of new and familiar flavors. The family-owned business will sell the ciders at its winery—planning more flavor experiments soon.  ABC 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Donald Brubaker, 41, attempted a Grand Rapids credit union robbery in January but left with no money and was sentenced on Thursday to one year in jail — he received credit for 95 days served and will serve 2 years of probation.  ABC 13
  • Nicholas Michael Avillion IV was arrested after a high-speed chase that began on April 7 in Ionia County when he refused a traffic stop and drove over 100 mph toward Kent County where deputies deployed spike strips (assisted by other agencies) to stop him, and he was arraigned on charges including fleeing and eluding and methamphetamine possession.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park released its summer concert lineup featuring 34 shows from May 30 through Sept. 14. Ticket sales open to members on April 19 at 9:00 a.m. — and will open to everyone at 9:00 a.m. on April 26 — with tickets available on the AXS Mobile ID app while the venue offers free parking and lawn seating.  WOOD TV

FINANCE NEWS

  • Hope Network named Nathan Ter Beek as its new chief financial officer; the Calvin University graduate who worked at MSU Healthcare will begin managing the nonprofit’s finances on April 14th—directing funds for its social and health programs.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Last Thursday, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that 19 and 20-year-olds convicted of murder cannot face a mandatory life sentence without parole because the penalty violates the state constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment. The decision means hundreds of cases will be sent back to local courts—judges will now consider each person's youth and other factors before determining a sentence.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Beckett Murray, a five-year-old from Fort Wayne, is relearning basic skills at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids after a seizure in December 2024 led him to have a hemispherectomy in March—he is expected to be discharged today. His mother Audrey also looks ahead as she awaits the induction for her fifth child on Monday.  ABC 13
