  • City officials announced free season passes for youth ages 17 and under until 11:59 p.m. May 25; physical passes can be picked up on May 5, 12, and 19 at Richmond, Briggs, and MLK Park pools—youth may link passes to ID cards to avoid a $5 replacement fee.  ABC 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Building owners Nathan Mayfield Sr. and Eloise Mayfield inspected a partially collapsed structure at Kalamazoo and Alexander Streets on Monday, April 13 after firefighters responded Sunday with no injuries and now plan to assess the damage and consider a renovation for mixed use.  MLive

  • Legacy Winery & Spirits is rebranding its bourbon line to Barrel Thief series after a cease and desist forced a trademark change, and its Hudsonville tasting room at Terra Station on School Ave will open later this summer after permit delays.  MLive

  • Gas prices in Grand Rapids are expected to rise this week as a breakdown in Iran ceasefire talks and a Strait of Hormuz blockade fuel global supply concerns + the local average now sits near $4 a gallon across over 240 stations.  FOX 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Huntington Bank's Ignite the Classroom event in Grand Rapids, 150 educators from local school districts thought only five would win a trip to Atlanta this July to visit the Ron Clark Academy. Instead, school leaders announced that all educators would go — sparking cheers and renewed enthusiasm.  ABC 13
  • Grand Rapids Public Schools board president José Rodriguez said the district will soon select a firm to help with its next superintendent search following Leadriane Roby’s lengthy tenure; the board discussed the plan Monday, Apr. 13 to ensure a smooth transition.  MLive
  • Fourth graders at Kenowa Hills Central Elementary won first statewide in the Presidential AI Challenge among 2,800 entries — they built an underwater drone with silent propellers to detect invasive sea lamprey in the Great Lakes and advanced to regionals via Zoom, with national finals results expected later this week.  FOX 17
  • The Grand Rapids Education Association — representing teachers — is petitioning the school district to update its bargaining process after an 18-month contract delay left educators working without a deal. The union seeks a process that replaces lawyers with district employees and board members and circulates a petition for support.  FOX 17

  • Judges and staff at the 61st District Court volunteered in Grand Rapids with nonprofits 70x7 Life Recovery, Feeding America and Meals on Wheels. They packaged food for meals and prepared demolition work for a future recovery residence — supporting community stability.  MLive
  • Microsoft has submitted public-backed conditions for rezoning its former Steelcase wood plant in Gaines Township to build a data center. A rezoning meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Apr. 15 at South Christian High School in Byron Center; Microsoft must start construction within 10 years.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • The GVSU lacrosse team went viral on March 29 when coach Tim Murray had his players drive to pick up NDSU opponents after their bus broke down (boosting team spirit), resulting in a 17-3 win. They will play Dayton on Saturday and then prepare for their conference tournament.  ABC 13
