  • Local entrepreneur Rob Wahl opened the Bridge Street Bar last month in a converted real estate office on the southwest corner of Bridge Street and Seward Avenue to bring a Detroit vibe to Grand Rapids. The 1,500-square-foot bar features Michigan sports memorabilia and a menu with local favorites like the Detroit Dog for $4.50 and the Firebird sandwich for $12—operating daily from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Former John Ball Zoo seasonal employee Steven Pook pled guilty to charges of taking photos up guests' skirts — including one involving a young girl — and using a computer to commit a crime; he is set to be sentenced on July 10.  ABC 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grand Rapids Public Schools revealed updated designs for a new $38M elementary school on the Aberdeen Academy site during a community meeting on Tuesday, April 15. Construction will begin later this year and the school is expected to open by fall 2027.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Four West Michigan communities will receive part of an $8.1 million award from EGLE’s Renewables Ready Communities Awards for solar energy projects. Lee Township gets the largest share at $4,040,000 for the Sunfish Solar project — Bethel Township, Hart Township and Barry County will receive $1 million, $600,000 and $297,500 respectively.  WOOD TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Dayna Polehanki introduced Senate Bill 202 Tuesday in the Michigan Senate to make a swatting call a four-year felony if done to provoke an emergency response — the bill imposes harsher penalties when a false report causes injury, serious harm or death. Local schools experienced swatting incidents, with Grant Public Schools once going into secure mode after a fake threat, prompting lawmakers to act.  WOOD TV

  • Ferris State University will partner with Remote Area Medical to offer free medical, dental, and vision care on May 31 and June 1 at the Ewigleben Sports Complex on 210 Sports Dr in Big Rapids. The clinic will open at 6 a.m. on May 31 with parking available at 11:59 p.m. on May 30—services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.  ABC 13
