COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ada Parks and Recreation will host the free Bark at Ada Park Dog Expo (free admission) for local pet owners on Friday, May 1 from noon to 3 p.m. at Ada Park, where pet lovers can meet local vendors and learn training tips.  FOX 17
  • Restoration crews in Grandville, Hudsonville and Jenison have seen nonstop calls after severe spring storms caused unexpected water damage in homes. Experts advise residents to locate their water shutoff and use moisture detectors to help prevent further damage.  FOX 17

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Strong 80 mph winds snapped a tree near 43rd Street and Division Avenue, dropping it onto a Kentwood home, crushing a neighbor’s porch and damaging two cars while Consumers Energy repaired a gas leak within an hour (residents said the family was safe).  FOX 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michigan’s new Acrisure Amphitheater, a 12,000-seat outdoor venue along the Grand River, will open on May 15 with a celebration headlined by Lionel Richie, and a community open house with local performances is planned for the following day.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grand Rapids Public District has hired a firm to search for a new superintendent as Dr. Leadriane Roby’s contract nears its end in June 2027. The board plans to vet candidates carefully for the upcoming transition.  FOX 17
  • Comstock Park High School turned its parking lot into a car crash simulation on Wednesday to warn students against distracted driving by staging a faux accident (involving local emergency services) near prom season.  FOX 17

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ruby-throated hummingbirds have been spotted in areas including Luna Pier, Romulus, Howell, Wyoming, West Olive, Cedar Springs, Muskegon and Grant. They began their spring migration in January and are making stops to gain weight while looking for nectar.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Rapids plans a $28 million sewer separation on Godfrey Avenue from the Grand River to Oxford Street to reroute stormwater away from the wastewater treatment facility (design approved and loan pending from EGLE), with construction slated to begin in 2028.  MLive

  • Northview High School senior William Dawson — cut from the bowling team his freshman year — worked hard to earn a spot on Indiana Wesleyan University’s team next year while also improving in cross country and keeping a 4.4 GPA.  ABC 13
