COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction is underway at Briggs Field, a Grand Rapids Public Schools athletic field near Briggs Park, where $1.5 million is being spent on a new track, bleachers, fenced field, and extra toilet rooms for community use. The project—funded by a $305 million bond approved in November 2023—is set to be completed by August and will allow the school to host more district events.  MLive
  • On April 24, over 2,000 people gathered at Grand Rapids’ Blue Bridge for a major Autism Awareness Month event, making it one of West Michigan’s biggest community celebrations for autism.  WOOD TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Former police officer Christopher Schurr faces trial on Monday for second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Patrick Lyoya during a 2022 traffic stop—while a judge has restricted photography by allowing only one videographer in the courtroom—so reporters must cover the trial from a media room.  MLive

  • Today, Dyngus Fest begins at Kosciuszko Polish Hall on Grand Rapids’ southwest side to celebrate spring, renewal, and Polish heritage with food, live music by the Chix & Styx Polka Band, and festive offerings on this free two-day event. The celebration runs Friday from 1 p.m. to midnight and Saturday from noon to midnight.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department approved a new 18-foot Diamondback rescue airboat to replace its unstable 2003 model that lacked a safe lift system for water and ice rescues on Reeds and Fisk Lakes. The boat will arrive by the end of 2025 — and the city plans to sell the old vessel.  MLive
  • Governor Whitmer visited the Hope Village affordable housing project in Grand Rapids on Thursday and toured tiny home foundations built by Mel Trotter Ministries. She also announced a $2 billion investment for 11,000 new homes as the project is set to finish by the end of the year (a key move to expand affordable housing).  FOX 17
  • Gov. Whitmer appointed Court of Appeals Judge Noah Hood to the Michigan Supreme Court on Feb. 26 to replace Justice Elizabeth Clement, and Hood—who served as a Wayne County judge in 2019 and joined the Court of Appeals in 2022—will serve until the term ends in 2026.  MLive
