  • Herpolsheimer’s Department Store’s 120-year history shows Grand Rapids’ retail evolution, starting as a dry goods shop and later inspiring The Polar Express. Today, the historic building (now the Grand Rapids Police Department headquarters) remains a key part of the city’s heritage.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Grand Rapids Public Schools will close the high school track in June for three years as renovations begin and temporary parking is set up. Officials confirmed alternative track facilities will be provided and details will be shared with student families soon.  MLive
  • Forest Hills Eastern held its golden hour-themed prom at Thousand Oaks Golf Club on April 25. About 285 students and guests enjoyed music, photo booths, and dinner (with parmesan-crusted chicken, pasta, and salad) as seniors Ben Lee and Kyra Valeros were crowned prom king and queen.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan law enforcement agencies began Operation Ghost Rider yesterday to curb distracted driving by using unmarked vehicles that alert patrols, and drivers using handheld devices now face a $100 fine + 16 hours of community service to help reduce injury crashes and fatalities.  MLive

  • The Dungeon, an underground speakeasy in Grandville, now offers a seasonal menu featuring Mediterranean-inspired dishes and craft cocktails. The revamped venue (housed at 3594 Chicago Dr. SW) is open Tuesday through Saturday with special wine dinner nights planned.  MLive
