BUSINESS NEWS

  • Yesterday, the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce broke ground on a new $11.6 million center (the Center for Latino Economic and Talent Advancement) at 1111 Godfrey Ave SW in Grand Rapids to meet its growing needs. The 12,000-square-foot facility will have a 200-person event space and is funded through a public-private partnership that includes $5 million from the state and $850,000 from the federal government, and it is expected to be finished by the end of February 2026.  WOOD TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr (34) testified on day five of his trial for the April 2022 killing of Patrick Lyoya, saying he joined policing to help people while body camera and cellphone video documented the struggle that led to his firing and murder charge by Kent County Prosecutor.  ABC 13
  • Former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr is in his fifth day of trial at the Kent County Courthouse for the fatal shooting of Patrick Lyoya— a Congolese immigrant whose fatal encounter on April 4 sparked protests. Meanwhile, a local businessman sent 1,000 postcards calling a rescue mission a crime hub after officials proposed relocating it to 1050 Leonard St. NW, and residents have expressed mixed opinions.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Whitmer launched the Ticket to Tuition sweepstakes for first-time FAFSA filers last month and over 12,000 students have entered. Applicants must text CASH to 855-5058425 before May 16 to win one of 10 $50,000 scholarships or one of 40 $10,000 awards — prizes credited through the Michigan Education Savings Program.  FOX 17

  • Grand Rapids marks 175 years since its charter agreement was adopted Friday as the city celebrates its milestone today. The city will host a birthday bash on June 7 at Rosa Parks Circle with live entertainment, family activities and food — a nod to its rich history.  FOX 17
  • The Grand Rapids Fire Department is accepting applications to hire between 14—20 new firefighters as new fire stations are built and the Fire Academy begins on Jan. 5 next year. Applicants must apply by 11:59 p.m. June 1, meet job requirements, and pass several tests to join the eligible-for-hire list at a starting salary of $52,763 plus benefits.  MLive
