COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hope Network will end its Wheels to Work service at the end of May because a funding gap makes the program unsustainable & risks its broader mission. The nonprofit will focus on fully funded rides for seniors and people with disabilities after careful review.  FOX 17
  • Grand Rapids City Commission awarded $150K in grants to Access of West Michigan and Jade Rabbit for urban farming in city parks — Access will add raised beds at Joe Taylor Park while Jade Rabbit will improve facilities at Garfield and MLK Parks, with a second funding round opening this fall.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Acrisure Amphitheater, a new 12,000-seat riverfront venue at 201 Market Ave SW, will open its inaugural season on Friday, May 15 with Lionel Richie headlining, and offers a free community tour Saturday, May 16 for locals; parking + transit options and food and bag policies have been announced by officials.  MLive
  • Carlos Santana will perform two summer shows with The Doobie Brothers as part of The Oneness Tour; the first is on Monday, June 15 at Acrisure Amphitheater in Grand Rapids and the second is on Thursday, June 18 at Pine Knob Music Theater in Clarkston.  MLive
  • Hudsonville High School hosted its 2026 prom on Saturday, May 2 at GLC Live at 20 Monroe in Grand Rapids. Approximately 860 students attended and enjoyed live music, appetizers, dessert, henna tattoos, a 360 photo booth, and a soft beverage bar.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A recent study shows that Michiganders spend nearly 5% of their median weekly income to fill a 15-gallon tank at $4.87 per gallon, while minimum-wage earners use over 13% of their pay, according to data from AAA and the Census Bureau.  ABC 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At North Oakview Elementary, first-grade teacher Kyle Braun was named Teacher of the Week after a surprise by 13 ON YOUR SIDE on Monday morning (he said the honor made him even more dedicated to his students).  ABC 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State officials expanded PFAS testing in Cascade by adding 76 homes, with 70 of 166 wells showing unsafe PFAS levels + free filters provided for affected households. EGLE estimates connecting to municipal water will cost about $12.5 million and could take several years to secure funding.  FOX 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The updated route launched on May 4 and now offers free service every 8 minutes along a clockwise route with stops at the new amphitheater, DeVos Place, Van Andel Arena, and the future Amway Soccer Stadium (part of a one-year pilot program with community feedback planned for summer and fall).  FOX 17
  • Zeeland Township approved $100,000 on April 29 to oppose RWE’s proposed 1,900-acre solar farm amid community concerns over farmland loss and the environment. Leaders noted that RWE provided $75,000 to help cover state review costs + a pre-hearing is scheduled for June 4.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • A recall warns that Specially Selected crème brûlée sold at ALDI may contain glass shards; Lactalis Canada initiated the recall on April 14, affecting 2,869 cases in several states (including Michigan) with the FDA classifying the product as Class II.  ABC 13
