Good morning, Grand Rapids.

The parents of Patrick Lyoya said they are in pain but will keep fighting for justice after a mistrial was declared in the case against former officer Christopher Schurr when the jury could not decide if the killing was murder — prosecutors may decide on a retrial.

Local NAACP President Cle Jackson called Thursday’s mistrial in former officer Christopher Schurr’s trial for the killing of Patrick Lyoya tragic—she said the group will urge Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker to refile charges so a new, diverse jury can be selected.

Yesterday, Judge Christina Mim in Grand Rapids declared a mistrial when jurors could not agree after nearly 20 hours of deliberation on the trial of former police officer Christopher Schurr—accused of killing Patrick Lyoya—and the case ended without a final verdict—prompting plans for a retrial.

Attorney Ven Johnson will urge Kent County Prosecutor to refile second-degree murder charges against former officer Christopher Schurr after a mistrial is declared on Thursday, June 9—family members will await his decision on the case involving Patrick Lyoya, who was fatally shot during an April 4, 2022 traffic stop.
