ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Multiple crews from Muskegon, Olive and Blendon Townships responded after a fire broke out Sunday afternoon at Mulch Pro in the 6600 block of 96th avenue in Blendon Township—calls came in at 2:24 p.m., the fire spread quickly, and roads were closed with no injuries reported.  FOX 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents can enter for a chance to win a family four-pack of tickets to the Grand Rapids Lantern Festival at John Ball Zoo. The sweepstakes runs from 12:01 a.m. today until 11:59 p.m. on May 18th—winners will be chosen by a random drawing on May 19th.  ABC 13
  • Fourteen Grand Rapids nonprofits, including ArtPrize and Grand Rapids Ballet, gathered Friday at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel to complete the training phase of the Capacity Building: Grand Rapids program offered by the DeVos Institute to boost fundraising, marketing, and strategic planning. The institute, founded by Dick and Betsy DeVos, will match each organization with a consultant to help build stronger boards and support future projects.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan DNR has halted its plan to euthanize Canada geese after lawmakers raised concerns about the controversial program; the department now will focus on researching nonlethal methods + encouraging landowners to try alternatives like nest destruction and scare tactics.  WOOD TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, May 10, more than 10,000 racers ran in downtown Grand Rapids for the 48th Amway River Bank Run that featured a 25K race along with 10K and 5K events and a community walk. Case Clinger (26) broke the American record in the 25K race with a time of 1 hour 12 minutes and 16.82 seconds while Carrie Ellwood (31) won the female race and each earned a $10,000 prize.  MLive
  • Runner Casey Clinger from BYU broke the American record in his first 25K at the 48th Amway River Bank Run on Saturday by finishing in 1 hour 12 minutes and 15 seconds—he made a fast kick to win and beat last year’s mark set by Diego Estrada.  MLive
  • On Friday, May 9, the River Bank Run Sports & Fitness Expo was held at DeVos Place downtown from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., where runners picked up their race packets and the public visited over 60 vendor displays to help ease race day stress on Saturday.  WOOD TV
