Good morning, Grand Rapids. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 13th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Due to code violations found by Spencer Township, residents of Rest Assured Assisted Living in rural Kent County must leave by Friday — seven still seek new homes. Owner Brandi Ball and staff are securing placements, and those unable to relocate may be taken in by Adult Protective Services.  FOX 17
  • Lionel Richie's show kicks off at the new Acrisure Amphitheater on May 15. City officials urge concertgoers to reserve parking ahead of time since on-site spots near $60 after fees are limited, and offsite lots and free park-and-ride options + ride-share pickups at the Fulton Street bridge offer alternatives.  ABC 13

BUSINESS NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Blandford Nature Center will host its fifth annual Vegetable and Native Plant Sale Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at 3145 Milo St. NW to offer organically grown vegetable starter plants and native Michigan plants; proceeds benefit Blandford Farm and environmental education programs (local managers and partners will provide gardening advice).  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Georgetown Township are invited to share feedback on housing and community development as officials craft a five-year plan tied to HUD funding. The survey is available online — or via a paper copy from the township office — until May 29 at 5 p.m.  FOX 17
  • Yesterday, the Roosevelt Neighborhood Association posted a petition inviting community input on renaming Cesar Chavez Ave. Some residents, including bakery owner Joshua Reyes, favor reverting to its original name Grandville Ave while others remain against the change.  ABC 13

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Harmony Brewing Company opened its pet-friendly patio at 1551 Lake Dr. SE, offering half-price dog beer with any human beer during May. The brewery will host a Puppy Pool Party on May 16 and a free patio etiquette class on May 22 (welcoming summer for pets and their owners).  MLive
  • Bike to Work Week runs from May 11 to May 17 in Grand Rapids as officials urge commuters to switch from driving to biking or using the bus amid rising gas prices + offer prizes for registrations.  ABC 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Griffins face the Chicago Wolves in the Central Division Finals with two home games at Van Andel Arena starting Thursday, May 14 and additional games if needed. Coach Dan Watson credits the team’s strong defense, led by goalie Michal Postava, for keeping playoff hopes alive.  ABC 13
  • Hope College men's lacrosse team ended a 20-0 season with three MIAA titles and became the first from the conference to reach the DIII national quarterfinals. They will face Bowdoin College at 4 p.m. Friday in Maine (a historic first).  ABC 13
  • Blythefield Country Club will host the 12th Meijer LPGA Classic from June 18 through 21 with 144 top golfers and expanded fan areas — including enhanced hospitality and food offerings — as organizers aim to raise $1.5 million for Meijer Simply Give.  FOX 17
