  • Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids has opened registration for its 24th annual Camp Sparkle — a free program that provides grief and cancer support through tailored sessions and a breakdancing workshop for children impacted by loss. The camp will run on June 16, 18, and 20 as well as on June 23, 25, and 27 from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m., and families must pre-register to participate.  ABC 13

  • Former Rockford CEO Mike VanGessel was named to co-lead the board at Invictus, a minority-owned construction firm formed by former Rockford Detroit executives. He will use his 38 years of Grand Rapids development experience to guide the new company and support projects in the Midwest — working alongside board co-chair Dennis Archer Jr.  MLive
  • Morning Belle will open its fourth location on Tuesday, May 20 at 355 Wilson Ave. NW in Walker—the former Stan’s Tacos space—and host a 7 a.m. ribbon-cutting with merchandise giveaways and free coffee for life for the first 100 customers.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Malori Salamango resigned from Grand Rapids Public Schools on May 12, citing burnout from rising caseloads and understaffing—her departure came amid teacher protests for higher wages while GRPS declined to comment further.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • EGLE announced it will spend $14.9 million to repair or remove 19 high-risk dams statewide—five in West Michigan costing less than $1 million each. The grants provide $900,000 to replace Sunset Lake Dam, $250,000 to restore Penoyer Creek, $90,000 for a study on the Portage Plant Dam in Three Rivers, $65,800 to remove the McMillan Dam, and $58,200 to study the Blackhawk Dam.  WOOD TV
