  • Food Truck Fridays returns to Riverside Park for its ninth annual series where over 20 food trucks serve homemade dishes and local bands play each Friday from 5-9 p.m. The series runs from May 16 to Aug. 18 with no event on the Fourth of July and offers a Frequent Fridays card for a chance to win prizes.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Christopher Schurr will not be retried for Patrick Lyoya's death and now faces a federal civil lawsuit as the Lyoya family seeks compensatory and punitive damages—no court date has been set yet.  FOX 17
  • Courvoisier Simmons was sentenced Thursday, May 22 to a minimum of seven years in prison (plus two years for firearm charges) after firing nine gunshots near MyPlace Bar in Grand Rapids that killed 27-year-old Lavadis Maurice Anthony Crawford-Blackman and injured another man.  MLive
  • Grand Rapids police are investigating a fatal shooting on the Southeast Side when a man was shot around 1:30 a.m. on May 23 on the 1400 block of Wealthy Street SE—he was taken by a private vehicle to a local hospital where he died about an hour later.  MLive

  • Courtney Peden, a U.S. Navy veteran, will be the first woman to lead the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard, and she will assume her role in June.  WOOD TV
  • A construction project repairing the Mackinac Bridge southbound lanes began in late March but has been delayed by cold, rainy weather — including a March ice storm — so lane closures will continue through next week. Officials advise drivers to plan trips during off-peak times as traffic is expected to increase for Memorial Day weekend.  WOOD TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study by the Environmental Working Group shows only about 20% of sunscreens sold are safe and effective. Dr. Stephen Cahill of Dermatology Associates of West Michigan said doctors recommend using SPF between 30 and 50 along with broad-spectrum and water-resistant formulas (mineral sunscreens like zinc and titanium create a physical barrier).  WOOD TV
