- ➤ U.S. Army veteran Bob Buys has brought home the remains of his great uncle, Sergeant James W. Swartz, after decades of waiting as DNA tests confirmed his identity; his funeral was held on May 3 in Fowlerville. He said his family will plan a reunion to honor his World War II service — a long-awaited step toward family closure. FOX 17
- ➤ Carla Ludwig founded Hope for Single Moms to assist single moms in West Michigan by offering career education, meals, babysitting help, and mentorship programs. The nonprofit plans to expand and will soon launch a cleaning training program to create more workforce opportunities — it already has a waiting list for mom coaches. FOX 17
- ➤ A Grand Rapids CrossFit gym held the Murph Challenge on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. to honor Memorial Day by having participants complete a workout that included a mile run, 100 pullups, 200 pushups, 300 squats and another run while wearing weighted vests (20 lb for men and 14 lb for women). The event ended with a potluck where the gym served burgers, hot dogs and drinks and neighbors brought sides and desserts. ABC 13

- ➤ Kentwood police are investigating a shooting that occurred at 4:45 p.m. on May 24 in the 5700 block of Ridgebrook Avenue SE that hit several vehicles and a home — no injuries were reported and no suspects have been arrested — as they seek further information. MLive
- ➤ Former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr will not be retried for the murder of Patrick Lyoya after Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker said the jury leaned 10 to 2 toward acquittal, so local advocates are urging Attorney General Dana Nessel to file charges. WOOD TV
