COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bob Buys, a Navy veteran, provided a DNA sample in 2017 to help identify his great-uncle, Sgt. Jim Swartz, who died in a Japanese prison camp during World War II. Sgt. Swartz’s remains were identified late last year and buried on May 3 in Fowlerville—letting his family honor his legacy near home.  ABC 13
  • East Grand Rapids has announced a free series of outdoor movies and concerts at John Collins Park near Reeds Lake, with concerts starting on June 9 and movies beginning on June 13. The events are family-friendly—attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket and follow park rules such as no grilling or open flames.  MLive
  • David T. McMahon’s Purple Heart was rescued from a Georgia scrapyard as local history buff Steve Quesinberry partnered with a Georgia VFW hall—he located a niece and nephew in California. Arrangements are underway to return the medal to McMahon’s family—this effort honors his legacy.  FOX 17

  • Gringo Dog's, a popular Grand Rapids hot dog cart, had its drive-thru soft opening on Memorial Day delayed because its menu screens and hood vent did not work. Owner Roger Bouwman said he will officially open the Doghouse on June 1 and will keep his cart near Van Andel Arena on Friday and Saturday nights—bringing hot dogs to local fans.  FOX 17

  • Amilija Petrulis — a fifth grade teacher at Cedar View Elementary — was named Teacher of the Week after receiving a surprise recognition that made her feel truly appreciated. Principal Sam Becker said she sets high standards and brings positive energy to her classroom.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deputy Omar Dieppa hosted the final active shooter training class on Monday night at Grand Rapids Township Hall to teach civilians key safety steps—Avoid, Deny, and Defend—in emergencies. He said training, which has increased after tragedies at Oxford High School and MSU—regularly offered at local businesses and churches—helps communities respond before police arrive.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan health officials said that 1-2 people in the state have been infected with salmonella from cucumbers grown in Florida, part of an outbreak that has affected 26 people across 15 states and led to nine hospitalizations. Bedner Growers issued a voluntary recall on May 19 for cucumbers sold at Farm Fresh Market locations, and officials advise people to discard any suspect produce & seek medical care if symptoms appear.  ABC 13
