  • The Hispanic Center of Western Michigan has acquired Tri-Cities Puentes Initiative—an organization that runs the Hispanic Heritage Fiesta and scholarship programs in Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg. This move expands HCWM’s service area to support more Hispanic families across the region.  WOOD TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Randy Buckner, 47, accused of murdering his one-time girlfriend by beating her and stealing her car, was returned from New Mexico—booked into Kent County jail on May 27, police said.  WOOD TV
  • Grand Rapids police identified Montaness Lowe, a 31-year-old man, as the victim of a shooting on the Southeast Side that occurred on May 23 at 1:30 a.m.—his death was ruled a homicide and the investigation is still ongoing.  MLive
  • A 25-year-old woman from Grand Rapids was seriously injured in a crash in Allendale after 11:30 p.m. Monday near the township fire station when a high-speed Honda Civic hit a curb and power pole—Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said a 25-year-old Grand Rapids man was arrested and treated at the hospital.  WOOD TV
  • Kent County Circuit Judge Scott Noto declared a mistrial on May 23rd after the jury failed to agree in Marcus Durayalle Lofton's trial — accused of shooting his wife after she served him divorce papers on Aug. 17th — and he will be retried soon.  MLive

  • Data from 2024 shows that 48% of the 397 GRPS graduates chose Grand Rapids Community College for higher education—other top choices were Grand Valley State University and MSU.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Rapids families will receive SUN Bucks starting in June to get a one-time payment of $120 per child for food at grocery stores, farmers-markets and online retailers. Households with a Bridge card will have the funds added automatically while others will receive a letter with instructions on how to apply.  ABC 13

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Grand Rapids was named an underappreciated gem for families by the BBC as it ranked fourth in the Best Places to Travel in 2025 series. The ranking highlighted local attractions such as Frederik Meijer Gardens, John Ball Zoo, and Millennium Park — a large park with playgrounds, trails and beach access.  ABC 13

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction is progressing on a five-story 148-unit apartment building called Verdant on Bridge Street at the former Duthler’s Family Foods site in Grand Rapids. The project will offer studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units along with a coffee shop, gym, dog wash station and rooftop deck, and it is scheduled to open in summer 2026.  MLive
