  • Fika, a new plant-based and gluten free eatery, opened two weeks ago at 1359 Plainfield Ave NE in Grand Rapids and serves breakfast and lunch options like buttermilk pancakes, Chickn and Waffles for $19 and other selections. The airy space is designed for customers to unplug and feel safe while enjoying local art at its to-go market — it operates 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal prosecutors unsealed a case against 19-year-old University of Michigan student Haoxiang Gao—who cast an illegal ballot in late October 2024 and later used a second passport to fly from Detroit to Shanghai on Jan. 19—leading to perjury and flight to avoid prosecution charges.  WOOD TV
  • A 53-year-old man from Hudsonville who was reported missing on Thursday after leaving his Georgetown Township home was found safe in Kent County on Saturday afternoon — deputies said he is now with his family.  WOOD TV
  • A man was shot in the abdomen and hospitalized after the incident on S. Division Avenue between Martin Luther King Jr. and Hall streets in Grand Rapids at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday—police are now searching for a suspect.  WOOD TV

  • Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park will host the CHIHULY at Meijer Gardens exhibit by world-famous glass artist Dale Chihuly—transforming indoor galleries and outdoor gardens with his colorful installations. Presented by Macatawa Bank, the exhibit will open May 1, 2026 and run through Nov. 1, 2026—offering visitors an immersive art experience.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grand Rapids Public Schools and Kentwood Public Schools were among 10 Michigan districts with the most homeless students in 2023-24, reporting 575 and 314 cases respectively — school liaisons worked with community groups to help these students access free education, transportation and tutoring amid limited federal funding and rising rental costs.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Job Corps Center in Grand Rapids will stop operations by June 30 following a phased pause by the U.S. Department of Labor — the program had cost problems and did not meet its goals. Rep. Scholten criticized the decision — saying it does not help create good jobs and her office will meet with center staff on Monday.  WOOD TV

  • During Men’s Health Awareness Month, Corewell Health urologist Dr. Conrad Tobert urged local men to get regular tests like PSA blood draws and heart screenings, recommending earlier tests for those with a family history or African American background — he stressed that talking with your doctor can help break the stigma around health issues.  WOOD TV
