- ➤ John Ball Zoo is checking a 19-acre site in Walker for a new aquarium that could add billions to the local economy—studies began in early 2021 and finished in 2024. The planned aquarium is expected to create about 2,500 jobs, though the exact location has not been confirmed. WOOD TV

- ➤ An 18-year-old Grand Rapids resident was arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 28-year-old man whose body was found in the woods behind York Creek Apartments (Alpine Township) in Kent County. MLive
- ➤ Sharon Killebrew (former finance director at Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative) pleaded guilty to conspiring to embezzle $1,170,935 and agreed to testify against an alleged co-conspirator, which led to the nonprofit’s closure in 2023. MLive
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Vicinity Energy steam plant in downtown Grand Rapids will install its first new 9MW electric boiler on Wednesday as part of a plan to cut carbon emissions using renewable energy (with funding over $2 million from the Michigan Public Service Commission) that will heat 112 buildings over seven miles of underground pipes once it starts operating in 2026. Grand Rapids Mayor David LaGrande and U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten will mark the kickoff event that day. ABC 13

- ➤ City officials in East Grand Rapids are debating a new development that will turn a parking area behind D&W into retail and residential space with 140 attainable housing units—some leaders support the plan while others worry about traffic and green space.
