  • A new restaurant with sandwiches and a drive-thru is under construction at 3130 Alpine Ave NW in Walker in an outlot of the Green Ridge Square shopping center—city approvals are complete and builders plan to finish soon.  MLive
  • Dolce Mini Cakes celebrated National Food Truck Day by parking its lit-up pink truck at 13 On Your Side to serve customizable mini pancakes and other sweet treats — including Nutella, strawberries, and Oreos. Owner Dasani Song said the business began during COVID-19 and has since grown with a second truck serving Mexican food — marking an expansion of her family-run ventures.  ABC 13
  • SpartanNash, a local grocery chain with about 20,000 workers, will be sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers for $1.77 billion—its shareholders are set to receive $26.90 per share. The Grand Rapids Public Museum closed on Wednesday when old pharmaceuticals including nitroglycerin were found in an exhibit, prompting a safety shutdown with the police bomb squad on scene.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • On June 12, Canadian border patrols at the Blue Water Bridge stopped a truck from Michigan and seized over 400 pounds of cocaine (estimated at $15 million) while 27-year-old driver Karamveer Singh faces federal charges for importing and trafficking (this is the fourth major bust at the bridge this year).  WOOD TV
  • Two men accused of conspiring to murder Darryl Yarber in a 2023 Grand Rapids case were ordered to stand trial after a four-day preliminary hearing—on Friday a judge determined there was enough evidence to charge them with first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.  WOOD TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • LG Energy Solution finished a $1.4B expansion in Holland after three years of work and now makes lithium iron phosphate cells for energy storage instead of EV batteries. Production is small now and will grow later this year—helping support power grids with renewable energy.  MLive

  • Crews fixed a water main break on Friday afternoon (June 27) in Grand Rapids, restoring water service to affected areas.  WOOD TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • ELM Community is partnering with RMHC West Michigan and the Lindsey Hunter Foundation to help families facing cancer by providing care baskets with comforting items at the Ronald McDonald House in Grand Rapids—efforts that ease emotional and financial stress during long hospital stays.
