  • On Wednesday night, July 2, the Grand Rapids Fire Department put out a tree fire on Griggs Street SW near Buchanan when fireworks sparked the blaze—damaging a nearby garage’s siding—before the flames spread further.  FOX 17

  • Walmart recalled turkey bacon that may be contaminated with Listeria and handrails with welding issues that can break off to protect customers—affected items are being removed from stores and online sales across several states.  MLive

  • Grand Rapids City Attorney Anita Hitchcock announced that she will retire on Sept 2 after 23 years with the city - she was credited with pushing police reforms and led a legal team of 17 with a $3 million budget.  MLive
  • Today, firefighters in Grand Rapids warn residents to store fireworks outdoors away from ignition sources and to follow label instructions to reduce fire risks. They note that the city will host a display at Ah-Nab-Awen Park on July 5 — fireworks will begin at 10:30 p.m.  WOOD TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors in Grand Rapids advise that when the UV index is above 3, people face a higher risk of burns, premature aging and skin cancer and must apply sunscreen and cover up—especially when swimming or sweating—and reapply every two hours to protect their skin even on cloudy days.  WOOD TV
  • Orkin’s 2025 Bed Bug Cities List showed four Michigan cities faced rising infestations; Grand Rapids climbed to 7th, Detroit moved to 3rd, Flint rose to 16th and Lansing was added at 48th while Chicago remained the most infested city. The rankings were based on treatment data (from May 15 to May 14) and applied to both residential and commercial treatments (indicating increased travel-related risks).  MLive
