CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Rapids Police charged a 15-year-old with reckless discharge resulting in death after a shooting that killed My’asia Johnson at a home near North Avenue NE on June 12 (after about a month-long investigation) and are still checking how the suspect got the weapon (details that remain under review).  FOX 17
  • Agents from ICE arrested Kleiber Siso Balza, a 25-year-old from Venezuela with active warrants in Virginia and Florida, on July 4 in Traverse City along with three other men, and authorities say he is linked to Tren De Aragua, a gang that engages in drug trafficking, murder and other crimes.  WOOD TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the fourth annual Upheaval Festival begins at Belknap Park with headliners Rob Zombie and Falling in Reverse set to perform with over 20 other acts across two days+ VIP pass holders get early access and special perks. Parking at Belknap Park has sold out, so attendees can use free DASH shuttles or nearby metered parking to reach the venue.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Plainfield Township is paving nearly 3 miles of Plainfield Avenue from I-96 to Airway Street and building concrete sidewalks and curbs to improve driver safety. The road work includes closure of the westbound I-96 on/off ramps today at 7:00 p.m. (the pavement will need 4 weeks to cure) and is expected to finish in late November.  WOOD TV
  • Today, the Grand Rapids Police Department and Network180 marked three years of their co-response program—pairing a mental health clinician with an officer to provide options beyond transporting individuals to an ER. Since its launch in July 2022, the program has provided over 4,200 responses, reducing ER visits, jail bookings, and increasing referrals to treatment.  WOOD TV
  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer said plans for a semiconductor plant in Michigan collapsed due to massive economic uncertainty, with records showing a technology firm from California had planned to build near Flint to create about 9,400 jobs. The project, which was set to break ground in 2025, was scrapped as the company decided not to build any U.S. facility (raising concerns over rising tariff pressures).  WOOD TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials announced yesterday that West Nile virus was found in mosquitoes from ZIP codes 49507, 49544, and 49525—areas in Grand Rapids, Walker, and Plainfield Township. They urged residents to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and remove standing water to reduce the risk of bites.  WOOD TV
  • Crews began installing a sky bridge to connect Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital with the new Joan Secchia Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital across Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids. Wealthy Street is closed between Jefferson and Lafayette until Aug. 13 — the bridge, built with 135 tons of steel, will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony next year.  WOOD TV
