  • Rick Szczepaniuk has kept Van Andel Arena clean for 30 years — he starts at 8 a.m. and leads his crew through after-show cleanups at concerts, games and events. The 66-year-old plans to retire next May — finishing his 31st year with the company.  MLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officers responded Saturday morning at about 10:40 a.m. near Diamond Avenue NE and Malta Street NE to a collision between a motorcycle and a vehicle— the motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital before he died, and the driver remained at the scene— as the Traffic Unit investigated the incident.  MLive
  • Two men died in separate car crashes last night—one in Kalamazoo when officers pulled a 24-year-old driver from a burning car and one in Ottawa County when a 25-year-old was found pinned in his vehicle as both incidents are under investigation with alcohol suspected in the Kalamazoo crash.  ABC 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Rapids Police said a motorcyclist died after a collision with a vehicle at Diamond Ave NE and Malta St NE around 10:40 a.m. Saturday — the vehicle driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.  FOX 17

  • This weekend, Music Unites Us 2025 in Holland offers a free concert with art displays and dancing lessons starting at 5:00 p.m.—while the Great Lakes Surf Festival in Muskegon provides surf lessons and yoga sessions—and the Girls Sunflower Festival in Grand Rapids invites families to explore sunflower fields and enjoy local treats.  FOX 17

  • Grand Rapids Public Schools spent $7M renovating a building on Aug.6 to prepare for the start of the school year. The new facility will open soon—offering a modern space for students.  WOOD TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan State Police reported 11,719 student safety tips in 2024—a 20% rise from previous years. The record shows that the OK2SAY hotline received nearly one-fifth of all tips since it began in 2014.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Volunteers arranged 660 white wooden crosses with the names of veterans who died by suicide along US-131 near LMCU Ballpark, adding 22 crosses daily from July 11 until the display concluded Saturday with a closing ceremony (1 p.m. at the American Legion Boat and Canoe Club on Park Street). Vietnam-era veteran Scott Harvey (who helped lead the effort) said the memorial underscored the lasting trauma of war and the need for improved mental health care.  WOOD TV
