Good morning, Grand Rapids. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 12th of August.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Culver’s launched three new cereal concrete mixers yesterday—featuring Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch—in a limited-time partnership with General Mills. Local restaurants also offered mixer flights so customers could try three mini mixers for the price of two while supplies lasted.  WOOD TV

CRIME NEWS

  • At a Grand Haven courtroom on Aug. 11, Denis Perez was sentenced to eight to 15 years in prison for his role in a road rage crash that killed 27-year-old Sha-Tera Coleman on June 25 on Lake Michigan Drive in Tallmadge Township when his Dodge Charger was driven into oncoming traffic.  WOOD TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Better Business Bureau of Michigan warned high school students and parents that fake ACT and SAT prep courses are being offered to steal money and personal information — scammers promise study guides and online courses that never arrive. Nakia Mills said victims may click on payment links that could install malware on their devices.  FOX 17
  • Grand Rapids Public Schools teachers will start school next week without a new contract as talks with the union continue after the contract expired on June 30. District officials have proposed a $4 million salary investment that would lift pay by about 4.5% (teachers currently earn around $60,000 while county averages are higher) as union leaders push for yearly raises amid uncertain funding.  WOOD TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On July 16, biologists from GVSU and Calvin University surveyed Plaster Creek at Covenant Park in Kentwood and found 505 freshwater mussels (including two state-listed species and one species of special concern) that help filter pollutants. The discovery offers hope for Plaster Creek's recovery as a multi-year project works to improve water quality by addressing urban runoff (from nearby airport and housing areas).  MLive
