COMMUNITY NEWS

  • County and township officials gathered at Grand River Riverfront Park in Lowell Township to mark progress on the Grand River Greenway, a trail along Michigan’s longest river that will span 85 miles when complete. The two-year project will invest $150 million from state and federal funds — linking with other popular trails to provide a safe outdoor path for local residents.  FOX 17

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Grand Rapids police said a man died after his car hit a tree — it rolled on private property along Annchester Drive SE and pinned him as he left his vehicle on Monday morning.  FOX 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trisha Yearwood will perform a holiday concert with the Grand Rapids Symphony on Dec. 17 at DeVos Performance Hall, and tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday—she has earned three Grammys and five No. 1 hits.  WOOD TV
  • The Grand Rapids Public Museum will display the complete Clapp Family Mastodon on Sept. 11—having been discovered in 2022 during a drainage project. The exhibit will feature a 3D-printed model and real bones, with plaques that teach how the mastodon lived.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Grand Rapids seem to have peaked at about $3.39 a gallon because nearly all refineries are running at full capacity and production remains steady. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said prices will likely drop below $3 later this year—unless unexpected events occur.  FOX 17
  • Consumers Energy said it will ask regulators to let households and businesses in 10 Midwest states share $29 million in costs to keep the J.H. Campbell coal plant running. The plant was meant to retire on May 31, but a federal order kept it open, and the company will ask to pass on the costs after the order ends on Aug. 21 — moving the extra cost to customers across the region.  MLive

  • Classes at Grand Rapids South Christian did not start today after administrator, teacher, and coach Mark VanStee died in a car crash Tuesday — the school postponed all Tuesday events and asked for prayers for his family and community.  WOOD TV
  • South Christian High School postponed its first day of classes after longtime teacher Mark VanStee died on Aug. 19 - he taught social studies, coached golf, and served as dean since 2003. The school canceled all planned activities and asked the community to pray for his family and colleagues.  MLive
