  • Families enjoyed a busy weekend as the Dożynki Polish Festival at Calder Plaza offered folk dancing, polka bands and authentic Polish food from Friday through today—creating ongoing cultural fun. Earlier, the Grand Rapids Ballet held Summer Dance Fest outside Peter Martin Wege Theatre, Kalamazoo hosted a Craft & Vendor Show, the 28th Street Metro Cruise showcased classic cars, and a Dune Ecology event taught about coastal plants at Dune Harbor Park.  FOX 17

CRIME NEWS

  • Police said one person was arrested Saturday night after crashing a stolen vehicle near the intersection of Butterworth Street and Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids—no one was injured and the vehicle had been taken from the area of Wealthy Street and Division Avenue.  WOOD TV
  • The sheriff's office said several deputies and its tactical team responded to a domestic assault report yesterday when an allegedly armed suspect barricaded inside a Plainfield Township home near Balsam & Holtman prompted officials to advise residents to remain indoors until the situation was resolved.  FOX 17
  • A stabbing near the intersection of 54th Street and Division Avenue in Kentwood injured one person early Saturday — police took a suspect into custody and are investigating the incident.  WOOD TV

  • A New York woman won the 54th annual Ms. Wheelchair America title after competing with women from 20 states in Grand Rapids on August 23 + the contest crowned her as Ms. Wheelchair America 2026.  WOOD TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Caledonia Public Schools will welcome students back on Monday, Aug. 25, at the nearly complete new Dutton Elementary—a $40M building funded partly by a 2020 bond and a supplemental $61M bond approved in May 2023. The school features centralized student resources, a large gym, an outfitted cafeteria and a fully accessible playground.  MLive
  • Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine held a white coat ceremony on Aug. 23 for 190 new med students—marking the start of their journey in medicine.  WOOD TV
