  • Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary is hosting Pet Adoption Tuesday this week and features Bitzy, a two-year-old dog with a medium coat who loves zoomies, belly rubs and ear scratches—she gets along with children and friendly dogs but not with cats.  FOX 17
  • Upcycle Bikes, a Grand Rapids non-profit, has donated more than 2,500 refurbished bikes over three years to parolees, refugees, and others facing transportation challenges—working with local partner agencies to provide free bikes and planning a Pedals for Progress event on Sept. 18 to expand its reach.  ABC 13

  • Stubble Grooming Studio opened on August 26 in West Side Grand Rapids at 430 Leonard St. and now offers full barbering services including haircuts, hot towel shaves, and facials (with vintage décor) while owner Johan Grimaldi said he created the shop to welcome all local clients (ensuring a safe space for everyone).  WOOD TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A West Michigan man who pleaded no contest to a drunk driving crash that killed Tracey Lynn Decker received a 36- to 60-month prison sentence on Monday — the court heard testimony from Decker’s daughter and sister detailing their loss.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Grand Rapids Public Museum is renovating its 1928 Spillman Carousel with accessibility upgrades such as ramps and a wheelchair accessible chariot—ensuring visitors of all abilities can enjoy its charm. The project, estimated to cost between 12 and 15 million dollars and part of a larger riverfront renovation, is expected to reopen the pavilion later this year.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kent County nearly finished a $500,000 project to lower a steep 15-foot hill on Jericho Avenue near Rockford High School after 18-year-old Navaeh Downs died in a November 2023 crash. Work planned during summer break to avoid school traffic will complete extra asphalt and ground repairs in two weeks (trees were removed in March).  FOX 17

  • West Michigan mother Ann McAlpine joined Holland Hospital’s Breastfeeding Connections group to get help breastfeeding her second son during National Breastfeeding Month. The group meets Tuesday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and uses weigh-feed-weigh sessions — a method that built her confidence.  ABC 13
