CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Valley Department of Public Safety is investigating a stabbing at GVSU that occurred Sunday, August 31st behind Kistler Living Center—officers responded at 12:15 a.m. and found a man with minor injuries while a suspect remains at large.  FOX 17
  • Grand Rapids police confirmed one person was shot Sunday morning at around 3:45 a.m. on northbound US-131 south of 44th Street SW in Wyoming — all lanes are closed as Michigan State Police investigate the incident.  WOOD TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • A WWII veteran known as Rosie the Riveter was the grand marshal for the Greatest Generation Celebration parade on Aug. 31—an event marking 80 years since a historic milestone and featuring a flyover.  WOOD TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city approved a $5 million contract with Erhardt Construction to start renovation on Oxford Trail in September, connecting Black Hills and Roosevelt Park neighborhoods with downtown. The project will add shade spaces, picnic tables, and bike repair stations—aimed at improving local recreation along the Grand River.  MLive
  • Ada Township issued a boil water advisory for parts of the township because a water main break lost pressure—residents should boil tap water for one minute or use bottled water until repairs are completed, which are expected by September 2.  FOX 17
  • In August, Grand Rapids-area planners reviewed 6 proposals that include drive—thru restaurants, housing developments, industrial facilities and a controversial rescue mission expansion. A final developer was named for the former GM stamping plant site after the Wyoming Planning Commission approved plans for a new Gelock industrial facility.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • A West Michigan man has begun a 1500 mile walk from Grand Haven to Miami to raise awareness for mental health (The Long Walk Project). He has covered over 280 miles in 26 days and will continue his journey to San Diego after reaching Miami.  WOOD TV
