COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 52nd annual Eastown Street Fair will occur tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. along Wealthy Street between Giddings, Lake Drive and the HUB Lot (started in 1973). The free event will feature 150 vendors, a parking lot pig roast by Harmony Brewing Company, live music, and fun activities for children (with crafts and face painting offered).  MLive
  • Kent County Veterans Services will host a free resource event for homeless veterans on Sept.11 at 1222 Bradford St NE in Grand Rapids from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering health screenings, benefit assistance and help with employment. Ottawa County will hold a similar free event on Sept.18 at the Central Park Place Event Center in Grand Haven—providing additional services to veterans and their families.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • K9 Resorts Luxury Pet Hotel in Kentwood now provides premium care and boarding for local dogs. Owners Mark and Megan Ivaska said the facility features an HVAC system that meets hospital standards (which helps clean the air) and soundproofing to lower dog anxiety as the first luxury pet boarding service in West Michigan.  FOX 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Louis Campau came from Saginaw in 1826 to set up a fur trading post along the Grand River and bought a 72-acre tract in 1831 that later grew into downtown Grand Rapids—his name lives on in local landmarks. Historical records show his early efforts helped shape the city’s identity.  MLive
  • Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids Township will host the ENLIGHTEN light show from Nov. 24 to Jan. 3, featuring a one-mile path of interactive lights and synchronized music that sold 80,000 tickets in its debut—this year's event will add extra restrooms, food, and an expanded beer garden for guests.  MLive

  • John Ball Zoo reported on Wednesday that Penelope the pygmy hippo gave birth to a calf weighing 11 pounds — the first born at the zoo. The animal care team is monitoring both as they bond.  WOOD TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, Sept. 8, lane closures on Old M-45 between the Grand River and Lake Michigan Drive in Ottawa County will slow travel as crews resurface the road, add a new guardrail, and complete shoulder work—expected to finish in mid-November with $507,000 in MDOT funds used.  ABC 13

  • Ravines at Inwood near Rockford enters its final construction phase—38 new for-sale units will be delivered in February as part of this 115-acre development that will include 146 single-family lots and 87 condominium units. JTB Homes and Interra Homes are completing the project with homes starting at $532,000 and $602,000.  MLive
