COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday morning, the 14th annual Grand Rapids 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb was held at LMCU Ballpark to honor 343 firefighters, 60 police officers — and 10 EMS members lost on 9/11 by having participants climb the equivalent of 110 World Trade Center stories while carrying a fallen hero's name tag. Kevin Milanowski from GRFD was honored with the HME Local Hero Spotlight Award as the event raised funds to support local firefighter programs and foster remembrance in the community.  ABC 13
  • Over the weekend, West Michigan hosted several free events including art classes at Creston Farmers Market, the 52nd annual Eastown Street Fair in Grand Rapids, and Celtic culture in Kalamazoo. In Grand Rapids, The Excellence Exchange ran from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.—drawing a strong local turnout for business and community activities.  FOX 17

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A proposed fast casual restaurant at Woodland Mall is planned as Building 1 and is drawing comparisons to Portillo’s—its menu lists Italian beef and similar items while the design mirrors the drive-through style seen in Chicago. A public hearing on the restaurant is set for Sept. 23—official names have not yet been confirmed.  ABC 13
  • Local baker Anna Varchola runs Midnite Patisserie in Eastown where she creates a new menu each week with seven to ten pastry items posted online by 8 p.m. Wednesday—customers then place orders for a busy Saturday pick-up at 10 a.m. and enjoy fresh Parisian style treats made with care.  WOOD TV

CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday night, around 7 p.m., police said a man was shot and killed at Mackay-Jaycees Park on Kalamazoo Avenue after a fight—life-saving measures failed and no suspect has been located.  WOOD TV
  • Police are investigating a shooting at Mackay-Jaycees Park on Saturday—one person was shot near 28th Street on Kalamazoo Avenue and authorities have not yet reported what led to the shooting.  WOOD TV

  • In a dramatic Week 2 high school football game, Zeeland West trailed 24-22 with one second left and needed 37 yards before completing a hail mary pass to secure a narrow win against West Ottawa—this turnaround has energized prep football fans in Grand Rapids.  MLive
