- ➤ A man in his 80s or 90s died after an overnight house fire in Alpine Township that started in the garage on 4 Mile Road NW at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday—fire crews arrived eight minutes later and found the blaze had spread rapidly, with officials saying it appears accidental. WOOD TV

- ➤ The Grand Rapids Public Library will unveil a new mural this Saturday, Sept. 13 at its Van Belkum branch at 1563 Plainfield Ave. NE—regional artist Dustin Hunt designed the artwork with feedback from the neighborhood while interactive art activities will engage visitors of all ages. MLive

- ➤ GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said that stations will start switching to the cheaper winter blend between Sept. 20 and Sept. 25 (which will extend periods of lower prices) causing gas prices to drop below $3/gallon while diesel prices rise due to increased home heating demand. Drivers who wait until the weekend may see further savings at the pump. FOX 17

- ➤ On Monday evening, teachers and students pressed for higher pay during a GRPS Board meeting — protesters spilled into hallways and onto sidewalks — as the board recessed the session over open meetings act concerns. GRPS and the teachers' union will meet twice in September to continue contract negotiations. FOX 17
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Grand Rapids received a $720,000 community grant from MDHHS to help remove lead paint and water hazards in homes where CHIP-enrolled children have high blood lead levels — the City Commission accepted the grant on Sept. 9 and the Kent County Health Department will lead inspections and water sampling as the program runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30. - ➤ The Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority will consider a request today to provide up to $4.6 million in tax incentives to convert three floors of the 151-year-old Ledyard Building on Ottawa Ave NW into 36 one- and two-bedroom apartments aimed at local residents. If approved, the $11.4 million project by CWD Real Estate Investment will begin construction late this fall—finishing in late 2026. MLive
