COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The private group behind Acrisure Amphitheater has raised 95% of its $70 million campaign—asking Grand Rapids residents to help close the gap—and the 12,000-capacity venue will open in May next year.  MLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A gas leak in the Northview neighborhood closed roads near Five Mile Road and Plainfield Avenue—Plainfield Road closed between Coit and Jupiter and Five Mile Road from Plainfield to East Beltline; the sheriff's office advised drivers to avoid the area as crews responded to secure the scene.  FOX 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artists are finishing their work for ArtPrize, which will begin tomorrow and run until October 4. Local venues such as Gazelle Sports will display over 900 entries from artists in 39 states and 18 countries—drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors and promising a boost to the city’s economy.  FOX 17
  • Gerry Reed, 99 years old, debuted her watercolor painting at ArtPrize today at Monroe Community Church as part of Beacon Hills retirement home's Ageless Art exhibit—she began painting in her 90s and shows that art has no age limit.  ABC 13
  • More than 180 makers and local vendors will gather at the Hudsonville Fairgrounds for the Farmgirl Flea Market Fall Market where shoppers can find vintage Halloween costumes, autumn decor, live music, food trucks and drinks. The event will run from 4 p.m. Friday, Sept 26 to 4 p.m. Saturday with tickets priced at $10 for Friday and $15 for the full weekend while children under 12 and active-duty military or veterans with ID gain free entry.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tuesday morning, Grand Rapids Public Schools celebrated the reopening of Houseman Field after a $5.1 million renovation that added new turf, track, lights, parking, and upgraded locker rooms & restored historic masonry including a new press box roof. The upgrades honored the Houseman family with logos for Ottawa Hills and Union, and Ottawa Hills will play its homecoming game Friday.  WOOD TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers on Plainfield Avenue saw a closure Tuesday and will face additional nighttime closures tonight and later this week as MDOT begins resurfacing—part of the final 75% of the $4.6 million Reimagine Plainfield Avenue project. Detours are set along Coit Avenue and Four Mile Road while signal upgrades and fall landscaping are scheduled for the coming days.  WOOD TV
  • On Monday, Sept. 15, the East Grand Rapids City Commission voted 4-3 to advance the Gaslight Village concept plan that would add six new buildings—marking the first step after months of public debate over the project's scale.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jeremiah Robinson, a GVSU freshman, was diagnosed with B-cell leukemia at 17 last summer and missed key school events before reaching remission in September. He now is in the maintenance phase and visits Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital once a month—sharing his journey to boost childhood cancer awareness.  ABC 13
