- ➤ Cedar Springs will host its 86th annual Red Flannel Festival on Saturday, Oct. 4, with festivities kicking off Friday evening through an 8:30 p.m. first responder parade on Main Street. Saturday events start at 9 a.m. and build to a grand parade at 3 p.m.—visitors not dressed in red may be playfully 'arrested' and must pay $1 for release. FOX 17
- ➤ Alicia Wyant has been named chief advancement officer at Mel Trotter Ministries in Grand Rapids and will lead marketing, fundraising and partnership efforts to support those facing homelessness. She brings media and leadership experience that supports her commitment to serve the community — a vision that guides her work at the shelter. MLive
- ➤ Churches in West Michigan are ramping up security after recent violence against houses of worship and a shooting incident in nearby Grand Blanc Township. The West Michigan Church Security Network, made up of over 100 churches, will host a safety seminar at Cornerstone Church on October 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.—training staff on how to respond to emergencies. - ➤ Grand Rapids Public Library will host a two-day book sale at 111 Library St. NE on Oct. 4-5. Books cost 50 cents each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and shoppers can fill grocery bags with titles Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., with the sale also offering new and used music and movies to help fund library services. - ➤ Kent County Parks Department is hosting Townsend Park’s Centennial Celebration today from 1 to 8 p.m. at 8280 6 Mile Rd. NE in Cannonsburg — the event features nature walks, stewardship projects and a fun run that celebrate 100 years of community history. MLive

- ➤ Chris Andrus announced on September 28th that he is stepping away from day-to-day operations at Mitten Brewing Company after 15 years to lower his stress and focus on new challenges—his longtime partner Max Trierweiler will continue to lead the brewery's operations. MLive
- ➤ Mines Golf Club owner Chris Sobieck is planning a $1 million upgrade to add a winter driving range building and expand the parking lot after receiving approval at a Sept 17 planning meeting—these improvements will help the course serve more customers when outdoor play is too cold. The new 6,022-square-foot building at 2301 O’Brien St. SW will include 11 bays for both private use and community practice. MLive

- ➤ The Jonas Brothers will perform at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Friday, Dec. 12 with Jesse McCartney opening along with Franklin Jonas and Deleasa—ticket sales begin on Oct. 2. WOOD TV
- ➤ Holland Christian art teacher Jenny Geuder has released her third book — Wonder of Mushrooms — that shows her love for nature and art. She drew on her many years of teaching and earlier successes with nature-themed books to guide her next creative project. FOX 17
- ➤ The Grand Rapids Public Museum will host the Tyrannosaurs—Meet the Family exhibit from Oct. 11 through April 26—featuring rare fossils, cast skeletons, and interactive digital displays that let visitors explore dinosaur history. The museum also plans events on Oct. 10, Oct. 16, and Oct. 22 for members, trivia, and educators. MLive

- ➤ Grand Rapids drivers see relief at the pump as AAA reports the average price for regular unleaded is $3.03—down 14 cents since last week. The price is also 35 cents lower than last month, making a full 15-gallon fill cost about $45. ABC 13
