- ➤ The former Naval and Marine Corp Center in Grand Rapids — vacant for five years — may soon have a new owner as community members weigh in on its future. WOOD TV
- ➤ The Domestic Violence Action Network held a vigil called 'Their Light Lives On' Monday night — starting at the Eberhard Center and then moving to the Blue Bridge — to honor the names of 60 domestic violence victims and note that about 2,500 incidents are reported each year in Kent County. - ➤ Michigan’s fiscal year 2026 school aid budget gives more money to students but cuts teacher recruitment programs, state superintendent Michael Rice said Friday. The nearly $21 billion plan raises per-pupil funding by 4.6% and boosts support for at-risk and bilingual students — while ending a teacher loan repayment program. WOOD TV
- ➤ Allendale Schools and GVSU leaders welcomed the new state budget after a long delay left schools unsure of their funds; Superintendent Cooper said the final aid should cover operational costs—while GVSU President Mantella warned that the increase may not ensure long-term stability. FOX 17

- ➤ Firefighters from the Michigan DNR and local fire departments are battling a wildfire near Houghton Lake in the Roscommon State Forest Area. - ➤ Kent County voters will cast ballots on Tuesday, November 4 to choose local candidates and decide on proposals for lodging tax funding a community center, moth suppression, school bonds and millages—in measures introduced in Byron Township, Lowell Charter Township, and several school districts. The ballot also features contests for city council, commissioner, mayor, clerk and treasurer positions in Cedar Springs, East Grand Rapids, Grandville, Kentwood and Lowell. ABC 13
- ➤ On October 6th, the East Grand Rapids City Commission approved a concept plan for the Gaslight Investors Planned Unit Development in a 4-3 vote after a packed meeting where neighbors voiced strong concerns and a protest petition was reviewed but not enforced — commissioners said they will further study the petition's impact.
